VMR9 stands for "Video Mixing Renderer 9." A different version called VMR7 exists, but it generally failed to impress. The "9" comes from DirectX 9.

This is an alternative to the overlay, which has been around for years. VMR9 works closely with 3D graphics cards and allows video to easily be treated like a texture on a 3D surface. This provides the advantages of the overlay with multiple images/videos or on multiple displays simultaneously.

VMR9 isn't widely used yet, compared to the overlay, and the quality of the resulting video (e.g. when playing a DVD) may depend more on the particular 3D capabilities and idiosyncracies of the graphics card. Usage may pick up when the new DirectX 9.0c comes out with Windows XP Service Pack 2. Right now, many people have problems with tearing in the video when using VMR9, though some put up with it for what they feel is better picture quality.

If you want to use VMR9, you'll have best results if your graphics card is advertised as a DirectX 9 accelerator or something similar.

The easiest way to experiment with VMR9 is with Media Player Classic, which you can download here. Just choose Options in the View menu, then look at Playback -> Output. You'll be able to choose between the overlay, VMR7 and VMR9. Just realize, though, that you may need to restart Media Player Classic for the change to take effect.

In DirectX9, multimedia applications can use a new video renderer to display decoded frames, but this renderer is not the default renderer for compatibility issue. On Windows XP, the default renderer is the VMR7, but on older Windows version it's the Video Renderer. The main difference is performance and overlay mixing capabilities: as older renderer use different versions of DirectDraw API (even older API for the Video Renderer), the VMR9 is based on DirectX Graphics, so it uses the Direct3D capability of your 3D video card. The result is an improved performance on recent 3D cards, better support of overlay mixing, compatibility with all Windows versions that support DirectX9, and some new capability such as de-interlacing and ProcAmp support (contrast, saturation, etc.)...
